The Smrekovec mountain range with its tall spruces hides many wonders. One of them is the mysterious Black Lake (Slovenian: Črno jezero), hiding high on the mountain in the middle of the forest. The small lake is thought to have appeared in the crater of an old volcano as indicated by huge rock formations lying beside the path. The lake is around 25 m long and about as much wide. It is two metres deep throughout the year. The lake’s black surface reflects the silhouettes of the trees surrounding it, creating a sight worthy of the best realist painter. The lake is perfect for relaxing, enjoying the calmness of the mountain and fresh air.
