2393 Črna na Koroškem
East of Črna na Koroškem in the village named Javorje, on the highest point of the Sleme pass along the Carinthia-Styria border, stands the parish church of St. Magdalene. She's the patron saint of the led astray, lead foundries, and children who have difficulty learning to walk, as well as an intercessor against bad weather and eye diseases. At an altitude of 1,156 meters, it's the highest-lying parish in Slovenia. The church was first mentioned in written sources as early as the 14th century, although few archival documents about its architectural history have been preserved. Today, its appearance no longer reveals any Gothic traces, yet it remains an interesting reflection of vernacular architecture and artistic aspirations. The current structure is a rectangular design that blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. On the eastern side, the single-nave church ends in a three-sided closed presbytery, while along the north wall of the nave stands a wide, unarticulated Baroque bell tower, covered with a sheet-metal onion-shaped roof. The church has two entrances. The western one is now walled with a wooden extension, from which access to the choir loft is provided, therefore, the southern side portal, of simple rectangular form, is used as the main entrance. On the west, the stone choir loft rests on two bulging columns with capitals. A special feature of the main altar, which bears the image of the penitent Magdalene, is the distinctive depiction of the Holy Trinity above her. The church also houses a Marian altar and an altar dedicated to St. Simon. Like many churches in the region, this one and its cemetery are protected by linden trees.
Originally, the church served as a filial church of the ancient parish of Bleiburg, and later as a branch of the parish in Črna. It was separated from the latter in 1789 as a curacy, which was elevated to a parish in 1972. Slightly lower, at an elevation of 1,000 metres, stands its 17th-century subsidiary church dedicated St. Jošt, patron saint of pilgrims, the blind, and homes for the elderly, as well as the protector of grain from fire.
